Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1932 DDR-001 Washington Silver Quarter presents light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — the inaugural year of the Washington Quarter series making this the first DDR-001 in the entire denomination's history. Die markers UVC-0488 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); and Stage C at LDS displaying a die crack on the left wreath extending to the rim through the D of DOLLAR, and a die crack across the bust that runs into the field both in front and behind the queue. The bust die crack's extension into the field on both sides of the portrait documents a fracture that propagated entirely through the bust area and continued beyond it in both directions — a severe structural failure indicating the die was near the end of its usable life. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan, originally intended as a one-year commemorative for the bicentennial of George Washington's birth but retained as a permanent design. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1932, the coin is composed of 90% silver at 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. The 1932-P had a mintage of approximately 5.4 million pieces, making it a relatively low-production date in the Washington Quarter series. As the primary DDR listing for the series' inaugural year, this variety occupies a historically significant position in the Washington Quarter variety catalog — it represents the first documented instance of reverse hub doubling on a denomination that would go on to produce hundreds of cataloged DDR varieties over the subsequent nine decades of production.
