Description

The 1932 Washington quarter marks the inaugural year of the series, introduced to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. The design was originally intended as a one-year commemorative, but Congress chose to continue it as the regular quarter dollar issue, replacing the Standing Liberty design. Sculptor John Flanagan created the obverse portrait based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's celebrated 1785 bust of Washington, while the reverse features a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings perched on a bundle of arrows, with two olive branches beneath. This Philadelphia Mint issue carries no mint mark, following the convention for the principal mint facility. The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3mm and a reeded edge.

Rarity Notes

Mintage of 5,404,000 pieces. A moderately available issue, though gem examples (MS-65 and above) can be elusive due to the typically weak strikes and contact marks found on silver quarters of this era.
