1927-D VAM-3A

Description

Discovered by Jeff Oxman in February 2000 and revised in March 2016, VAM-3A of the 1927-D Peace Dollar pairs a doubled left obverse with a distinctive die gouge below the letter E in LIBERTY. Cataloged as 3A II 3 B2a with I-3 importance and R-6 rarity estimating 13 to 30 known specimens, the obverse carries a slightly curved die gouge positioned in the rays below E in LIBERTY. The die gouge provides a quick diagnostic for attribution, as its curved shape and specific location distinguish it from other 1927-D VAM varieties. The doubled left obverse component indicates hub doubling affecting the left portion of the obverse design, adding a manufacturing variety element to the die damage feature. The 1927-D Peace Dollar is a key date in the series with a mintage of just over one million coins, making it one of the lowest-production Denver Mint Peace Dollars. The Denver Mint struck Peace Dollars from 1922 through 1927, and the 1927-D represents the final Denver issue. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this scarce variety on a key-date Peace Dollar combines hub doubling with a curved die gouge below the E in LIBERTY.
