Description

This 1926-P Peace Dollar VAM-1C1, discovered in 2005, features a die gouge below the G in GOD on the obverse along with beveling at the rim at the 8 o'clock position. An unusual characteristic of this variety is that it exists paired with two different reverse dies, appearing in an earlier state with the early stage of the VAM-1C2 reverse and later with a normal reverse die. This die marriage progression indicates the obverse die outlasted its original reverse partner and was subsequently paired with a replacement reverse die, a practice the Mint employed routinely to maximize die utilization. Classification is II 1 B2a with a rarity rating of I-2 R-5. The die gouge below the G in GOD serves as the primary diagnostic for identifying this obverse die, while the rim beveling at 8 o'clock provides additional confirmation. Collectors should note that coins from the earlier reverse pairing will show different reverse characteristics than those from the later normal reverse, despite sharing the same obverse die.
