1926 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1926 1-cent WDDO-005, this Lincoln Wheat Cent displays one of the most diagnostically distinctive forms of hub doubling on Victor David Brenner's obverse: an extra eyelid shows just below the main eyelid, giving Lincoln the appearance of a pronounced double contour around his eye. This form of doubling is particularly valued because it affects a focal point of the portrait rather than peripheral lettering, making attributed specimens visually striking even at moderate magnification. A complementary die marker strengthens the attribution: a small die gouge, appearing as a raised dot on struck coins, can be found above the I in LIBERTY. This incuse mark in the die steel transferred consistently to every coin struck from this working die, providing an independent confirmation checkpoint. No significant reverse markers have been documented. The 1926 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams. Examine the eyelid area under 7x to 10x magnification for the secondary contour, then locate the die gouge above I in LIBERTY.
