Description

Attributed to David Close, this 1926-D Peace Dollar VAM-3 is classified as 3 II 2 - B2a and features doubled digits in the date — specifically the 2 and 6. The 2 shows doubling at the top inside of its upper loop, while the 6 is doubled on the right side of its top curved bar, creating visible secondary impressions on two of the four date numerals. Beyond the date, the designer's initials are slightly doubled toward the date, and the letters TRV on the right side also exhibit slight doubling, extending the hub displacement evidence across multiple obverse zones. This pattern of doubling concentrated on the date and nearby elements is consistent with the II 2 obverse classification, indicating a specific die-hubbing relationship. Rated at I-2 for interest and R-5 for rarity, an estimated 1 to 30 specimens are known. The 1926-D Peace Dollar had one of the lower mintages in the series from the Denver Mint, making all varieties from this date-mint combination scarcer in absolute terms.
