Description

Reported by Travis Dobbins in 2017, this San Francisco Mint Peace Dollar — designated II1 - B2a, I-2, R-6 — documents a die pair in advanced structural failure, with die gouges, cracks, and displaced design breaks converging to create a variety of considerable visual interest. Die gouges appear in the rays at the IB area and at the left U in UNITED. More dramatically, a horizontal die crack runs across the tail feather ends and continues over to above PEACE, where a slight displaced design break indicates the die has begun to separate along the crack line, pushing metal out of plane. The displaced break above PEACE marks the transition from a simple crack — which merely interrupts the surface — to structural displacement where one section of the die has shifted relative to another. The C3 sub-designation within the VAM-1 die marriage sequence indicates this is the third documented stage of progressive die failure on this particular pair.
