Description

Third in the Wexler doubled die obverse catalog for 1925-S Lincoln Wheat Cents, WDDO-003 presents its primary diagnostic as an extra eyelid visible just below the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait. The eyelid area is one of the most reliable zones for detecting obverse hub doubling on Lincoln Cents because the fine curved line of the lid readily reveals even modest secondary impressions. Additionally, possible doubling shows on the lower right side of the first T in TRUST, providing a secondary confirmation point in the motto area. The die markers for this variety remain undetermined — the examining coin was a low-grade specimen, and higher-grade examples are needed to establish reliable obverse and reverse die markers for confident attribution independent of the doubling itself. This limitation is significant because it means collectors must currently rely on the doubling characteristics alone rather than supplementary die-specific features. Attributed by the Wexler Team with the variety designation 1925-S 1 cent WDDO-003, this San Francisco Mint Wheat Cent dates from the mid-1920s when S-mint cent production was substantially smaller than Philadelphia output. Collectors should examine the eyelid under at least 7x magnification and check the lower right portion of the first T in TRUST for secondary impressions.
