Description

Bearing dual variety status, this 1925 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent is both a doubled die obverse (WDDO-002) and a repunched mint mark (WRPM-008), making it an S/S/S triple-punched mint mark with tilted and rotated repunching. Extra thickness from the doubled die shows on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST, reflecting hub misalignment during die production that displaced these design elements. The concurrent WRPM-008 attribution documents an S mint mark punched over itself three times with rotation between each application — a striking example of the hand-punching variation that characterized pre-1990 mint mark application. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1925-S 1 cent WDDO-002, this variety was examined from a low-grade specimen, and die markers on the reverse require a higher-grade example to fully document. The obverse die markers confirming the WRPM-008 repunched mint mark are integral to identifying this dual variety. Finding both a doubled die and a triple repunched mint mark on a single 1925-S cent makes this an especially desirable variety for Lincoln Wheat Cent specialists.
