1924-S VAM-1T

Description

A relatively recent discovery attributed in 2021 by the collector known as vampicker, the 1924-S VAM-1T is classified as II 1 - B2a (Short Die Gouge Liberty Head Nose) and rated I-2 R-5. The primary diagnostic is a short horizontal die gouge protruding from the tip of Liberty's nose on the obverse. Die gouges result from accidental damage to the die face, typically from contact with foreign objects or tools during handling. A secondary feature is slight doubling on the right leg of the letter R in LIBERTY, visible on the right side. The reverse carries a B2a die pairing. San Francisco struck 1.73 million Peace dollars in 1924, the lowest mintage among the three active mints that year, making S-mint examples inherently scarcer. The recent discovery date of VAM-1T demonstrates that new die varieties continue to be identified in the Peace dollar series more than a century after these coins were struck, as collectors examine their holdings with fresh eyes and modern imaging tools.
