1924-S VAM-1N

Description

Discovered by BigJayVee in 2017, the 1924-S VAM-1N is a Peace Dollar variety classified as Vertical Doubled Die Gouge, carrying rarity I-2 R-5 (estimated 31-75 known). At R-5, this is a genuinely scarce variety with a small surviving population. This 90% silver dollar from the San Francisco Mint, designed by Anthony de Francisci with the distinctive reverse TRVST spelling, features a die gouge as its primary identifying characteristic. Die file polishing lines serve as secondary markers, and per LVA (Leroy Van Allen), a distinctive "hockey stick" polishing line is present — a curved, hooked mark left by the polishing tool that earned its colloquial name from the shape it traces on the die surface. The "hockey stick" marker is a reliable attribution point for separating VAM-1N from other 1924-S die marriages. Peace Dollars were struck at 412.5 grains of 90% silver, continuing the de Francisci design authorized in 1921. The 1924-S is a lower-mintage date in the series, and an R-5 variety within it narrows the available population significantly, making confirmed examples noteworthy finds for VAM collectors.
