Description
Discovered in 2010 by Larry Briggs, the 1924-S VAM-1H Peace Dollar is classified as II1 - B2a and known as the Die Scratch NI, Pitted Obverse variety. The rarity is rated I-2 R-5, indicating an estimated 31 to 75 examples are known. The obverse die II1 shows raised dots and splotches on Liberty's head, neck, and the left field resulting from a worn die surface that transferred pitting marks onto struck coins. The reverse die B2a features a long, thin radical die scratch running from the rim downward between the letters N and I of UNITED, extending to just above the eagle's left wing. A sub-variety designated B2b is noted for its low mint mark positioning. The 1924-S Peace Dollar had a mintage of 1,728,000 pieces, making it one of the lower-production San Francisco dates in the series. The pitted obverse texture, created by progressive die deterioration, paired with the dramatic reverse die scratch produces a variety with strong visual character that is readily identifiable even at modest magnification levels.
