1924-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, cross-referenced as CONECA 1-R-VI and Coppercoins 1924S-1DR-001 (Wexler Variety ID: 1924-S 1c WDDR-001), this 1924-S Lincoln Wheat Cent reverse doubled die is Class VI extra thickness and is described as extremely strong — manifesting on both wheat ears and stems, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the flanking dots, the upper letters of ONE, and OF AMERICA. The strength places it among the most visually impressive reverse doubled dies in the Wheat Cent series. Reverse die markers are well documented: a light die scratch from the lower B to the second U of PLURIBUS; two additional scratches from the lower second U to the S of PLURIBUS; die scratches running north and north-northeast from inside the lower C in CENT. No obverse die markers were confirmed on the circulated specimen examined. Class VI extra-thickness doubling results when a working hub is pressed into a die multiple times with slight misalignment, leaving overlapping thickened device outlines. The 1924-S cent was struck in bronze at San Francisco with a relatively modest original mintage.
