Description

This 1924 (S) Lincoln Wheat cent displays a pre-cud on the reverse spanning 8:00 to 10:00. A pre-cud is the stage of rim failure at which a crack has traveled along the die rim and the enclosed section has begun to sink under striking pressure, but the piece remains attached to the die body and has not yet broken free. The struck coin shows a raised crack outlining the affected arc with the interior design weakening rather than the featureless plateau of a full cud. San Francisco struck 11,696,000 cents in 1924, and the two previously cataloged 1924-S rim failures are both retained cuds on the reverse.
