Description

The 1923-P VAM-1AB is an eliminated variety listing in the Peace Dollar catalog, originally discovered by David Close. The Peace Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci, bearing his initials AF on Liberty's neck. In an April 2010 revision, VAM-1AB was eliminated and split into two successor varieties: VAM-1AB-1 and VAM-1AB-2. This reclassification reflects the discovery that what had been attributed as a single die variety actually comprised two distinct die states warranting separate entries. Additionally, the former VAM-1AU was eliminated and folded into VAM-1AB-1, consolidating three original listings into two refined entries. Such splits and mergers are routine in VAM catalog maintenance, as improved photographic documentation and larger reference populations let researchers distinguish subtle differences that earlier attributions grouped together. Discovery-grade specimens have been documented in NGC MS-64 holders, confirming high-quality examples exist for study. Collectors holding coins attributed as VAM-1AB should re-examine their specimens to determine whether they align with VAM-1AB-1 or VAM-1AB-2, as the original combined designation is no longer current.
