1923-D VAM-1AT2

Description

Identified by David Close in 2012, the 1923-D VAM-1AT2 preserves a small triangular rim cud extending into the field where a die crack meets the rim above IN — a textbook example of how die cracks progress to cuds when stress fractures cause a section of die metal to break free. The triangular shape reflects the geometry of the die crack intersection: where the crack met the rim at an angle, the freed fragment left a triangular void that filled with metal during striking, producing a raised triangular blob on the coin's surface. Classified as I-3 R-6, the R-6 rarity indicates only 13 to 30 estimated survivors — a scarce Denver Mint variety. The 1923-D was one of only a handful of Denver Peace Dollar dates, giving Denver issues an inherent collector following. De Francisci's Peace Dollar, with its radiant Liberty portrait and perched eagle reverse, was struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm and 26.73 grams at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office. Look above IN for the small raised triangular rim cud where the die crack reached the rim and freed a section of die steel.
