1923-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

A strong eastward spread on the 1923-D Peace dollar WDDR-001 shows on the olive branch and leaves, the rays running through the olive branch area, the rays to the left of the lower back of the eagle, the leg feathers, and the inside of the eagle's beak. Cross-references: VAM #3; TH-DDR-001; Wexler Variety ID 1923-D $1 WDDR-001. Die markers include a die crack along the base of the bust on the obverse and multiple additional markers confirming the specific die pair. The 1923-D Peace dollar was struck at Denver with a mintage of approximately 6.8 million coins, placing it among the more available Denver Peace issues. The Peace dollar series, designed by Anthony de Francisci and first struck in 1921, depicted post-World War I peace with an eagle at rest on the reverse — the eagle whose olive branch and beak show the strong eastward doubling characteristic of WDDR-001. The dual cross-reference to VAM #3 and TH-DDR-001 confirms this variety's place across multiple Peace dollar reference systems. Multiple die scratches run SW/NE through the RU in TRUST.
