Description
Discovered in 2010 by Jim Bailey, the 1923-D VAM-1AO1 is a die gouge variety of the Denver Mint Peace Dollar, classified as 1AO1 II1 - B2a with a rarity rating of I-3 R-6. Anthony de Francisci's Peace Dollar design, struck in 90% silver, serves as the canvas for two notable obverse die gouges. The obverse displays a wide die gouge at the rear of the tiara band containing multiple internal lines, along with a diagonal die gouge line across the front of the eye. The die gouge near the eye is particularly striking because of the specific location and the multiple lines within the tiara-band gouge, suggesting a possible origin in die clash marks, though a higher-grade specimen is needed to confirm. The variety was first listed as VAM-1BU before formal reclassification as VAM-1AO1. For collectors pursuing Peace Dollar VAMs from the Denver Mint, this R-6 rarity presents two independent die gouges as clear attribution points under moderate magnification.
