1923-D VAM-1AM

Description

Discovered by David Close, this 1923-D Peace dollar is designated VAM-1AM (revised February 2013) with classification II 1 and a B2a reverse under the formal title Die Chip AM. The reverse B2a die shows a die crack running through the middle of the letters of AMERICA with a small die chip on the crack extending up to the rim between the A and M. In a later die state, a slight displaced field break and chip develop below the right A in AMERICA, indicating progressive die deterioration. An earlier die stage exists with the crack through the centers of AMERICA but without the chip or the crack through PLURIBUS, allowing collectors to distinguish die states by the presence or absence of these secondary features. The 1923-D Peace dollar was struck at the Denver Mint during a period of heavy silver dollar production, and die chip varieties on the reverse lettering are among the more accessible VAM attributions for collectors new to the Peace dollar series.
