Description
Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in July 2004, VAM-1AD documents a die crack on the 1923-D Peace Dollar reverse running below the bottom ray above the lower wing tip, with a wide break developing at the feathers. Classified as II 1 - B2a with R-5 rarity (30–75 known), this variety captures the progression from die crack to die break in a visually accessible location on the eagle's wing. The break at the feathers indicates the die had reached an advanced state of deterioration, with the crack widening sufficiently to allow metal flow into the gap during striking. The 1923-D Peace Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint with a mintage exceeding 6.8 million, yet R-5 rarity indicates this particular die marriage produced a relatively small number of coins before the damaged die was retired. Die breaks on the eagle's wing tip are among the more dramatic reverse failures documented on Peace Dollars.
