Error
Description
The 1923-D VAM-1B2, designated Die Break O,1,Peg Leg, Y and rated I-3 R-6, was discovered by David Close with revisions by Roger Beckner in 2018 and again in 2020. The die pairing is II1-B2a. On Obverse II1, a die crack runs from the top-left of the 1 in the date and extends diagonally to the right up to the neck, with a displaced field break. In the late die state, two die cracks descend to the lower-left from the top of the 1, accompanied by a large die chip at the upper left. An additional die crack runs along the right side of the hair bun, passing through the vertical bar of the Y in LIBERTY and extending to the rim, with a displaced field break on the right side of the Y. The I-3 / R-6 rarity rating places this variety in the scarce-to-rare category. The 1923-D Peace Dollar is a 90% silver coin struck at the Denver Mint, employing the TRVST spelling in the motto. At R-6, relatively few examples have been documented, making die-state attribution an important component of a complete census assessment.
