Description

Strong Class V counter-clockwise rotated hub doubling with a pivot point at approximately 12 o'clock distinguishes this first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1922 Peace Dollar. The rotational spread radiates outward from the pivot, producing visible doubling on the olive branch and leaves, eagle's talons, back feathers, and the underside of the right wing — elements farthest from the pivot point showing the most pronounced displacement. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1922 $1 WDDR-001, the die markers tell the story of a heavily used die pair: the obverse carries a long die crack along the base of the bust, while the reverse is described as Very Late Die State, indicating the die was pushed to its mechanical limits before retirement. The 1922 Peace Dollar is the first year of low relief production, following the switch from the high relief design used exclusively in December 1921. Philadelphia struck the 1922 date in substantial numbers, and the combination of strong Class V doubling with advanced die deterioration markers makes WDDR-001 a compelling study in both hubbing error mechanics and die longevity.
