Description

Discovered in 2012, this VAM-1W Peace Dollar variety features a collar clash — reeding impressions transferred to the die rim from contact with the collar die, visible below the eagle's tail and the word Peace on the reverse. Classified as 1W II1 - B1a (Collar Clash) with a rarity rating of I-2 R-6, this variety documents one of the more unusual error mechanisms in the Morgan and Peace Dollar VAM system. A collar clash occurs when the collar — the ring that forms the coin's edge and reeding — strikes against the die face under pressure, transferring its reeding pattern onto the die surface where it then reproduces on subsequent coins. The reverse is designated B1a, with a die marker of diagonal polishing lines on the wing tip serving as a diagnostic confirmation point. The 1922-P Peace Dollar holds the distinction of being the highest-mintage issue in the entire Peace Dollar series (1921-1935), with over 51 million struck at Philadelphia.
