Description

Discovered by David Close, the 1922-P VAM-1E is cataloged as 1E II 1 - B1a with the designation Slanted Die Gouge Between IB, rated I-3 R-4. The obverse die II 1 carries a slanted die gouge in the rays between the I and B of LIBERTY. Peace Dollars, introduced in 1921 and designed by Anthony de Francisci, bear the spelling TRVST rather than TRUST on the reverse, a stylistic choice reflecting classical Latin lettering. The B1a reverse designation indicates an early reverse die type for the Peace Dollar series. What distinguishes VAM-1E is the character of the gouge itself: it closely resembles the so-called Hair Pin die gouge but is differentiated by a small indented zig-zagging line running under the rays parallel to the main gouge. This subtle secondary feature appears unique among Peace Dollar VAMs, and its occurrence on an early B1a reverse adds further significance. The I-3 R-4 rating places this variety as scarce but collectible for patient attributors. Philadelphia Peace Dollars of 1922 were struck in large numbers, making population study feasible for this variety designation.
