Description

The 1922-D VAM-1AF is a Peace Dollar die variety struck at the Denver Mint, cataloged within the Peace Dollars 1921-1935 series. This silver dollar weighs 26.73 grams, measures 38.1 mm in diameter, and is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. The variety was discovered in 2011 and represents an eliminated early die state of the previously listed VAM-1U. Classified as 1AF II1 - B2a, the defining feature is a significant die break above the letters TRV in TRUST. On the obverse (die state II1), a die crack extends from Liberty's neck through the top of the letter T, continuing to the right above RVST, accompanied by a displaced field break at the top of the T and above RV. This displaced field break indicates that the die fracture progressed beyond a simple crack into actual metal displacement, creating a raised irregular area on struck coins. The 1922-D is the highest-mintage Peace Dollar issue with over 15 million pieces produced at Denver, making varieties on this date accessible to collectors at various budget levels. Anthony de Francisci's high-relief design of Liberty wearing a radiate crown, paired with a perched bald eagle on the reverse, defined the Peace Dollar series that commemorated the end of World War I.
