Description
Classified as 1BB IV1 D2a and designated Scribbling Die Scratches number 11, this 1921-S Morgan Dollar exhibits fine die scratches in various directions on the over-polished tail feathers around the eagle's right leg, between the left wing and body, and in the middle of both wings. The San Francisco Mint's 1921 Morgan Dollar production shared the same hurried manufacturing context as Philadelphia and Denver — after a seventeen-year suspension, all three mints resumed coinage simultaneously, and the intensive die polishing applied to newly prepared dies left characteristic multidirectional scratch evidence. The D2a reverse classification indicates a specific category of scribbling die scratch placement, and each numbered variety in the series documents a unique die with its own distinct scratch pattern despite the similar overall description. Die pair number 189 confirms the universal 1921 master die. The designation as number 11 in the scribbling series for the 1921-S indicates this was among the earlier such varieties cataloged for the San Francisco issue. Struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint.
