1921-S VAM-1B3 Thorn Head Die Gouge, Die State 3 Discovered by Martin Field, October 1978 This coin is a Hit List 40 Morgan Vam. 1B3 (revised) IV 1 D2a (Thorn Head Die Gouge, Die State 3) (189) Obverse IV 1 - Third die gouge state with polished die. Die gouges in cap, in field behind cap fold and in denticles above N remain. A long diagonal thorn-like die gouge is added in field to right of right wheat leaf above Phrygian cap. Polishing lines in top right field. DPIS – In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Die gouge emerges from the top of the Phrygian cap. This is the original "thorn head" pictured as VAM-1B in the so-called VAM book, Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars, 4th ed. 1998 by Leroy C. Van Allen and A.
