Description

Discovered by vamsterdam in October 2018, the 1921-S Morgan Dollar VAM-1AJ2 is classified as IV 1, D2a (Denticle Impressions Above Arrow Feather, Clashed I), die pair 189. The obverse shows a clashed die with a faint partial incuse I from IN on the reverse visible next to Liberty's neck, documenting a die clash event where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them. In 1921, dates were part of the master die, so there is no variation in date position across different die pairs from this final year of Morgan Dollar production. The denticle impressions above the arrow feather on the reverse provide the primary pickup point, representing transferred rim detail from a misaligned strike or die contact. Combined with the clashed I on the obverse, this variety offers diagnostics on both sides for attribution of the San Francisco Mint die marriage.
