Description

Discovered by Michael Ash in June 2006, the 1921-S VAM-1AF Morgan Dollar carries the classification IV 1 · D2a (Vertical Die File Lines All Over Obverse & Reverse) with die pairing number 189. The obverse (IV 1) shows medium vertical die file lines distributed across all fields — systematic linear striations introduced during aggressive die maintenance filing that covered the entire obverse die face. The reverse (D2a) exhibits medium and heavy vertical die file lines similarly distributed across all fields, with the "heavy" characterization on the reverse indicating deeper or more pronounced filing strokes than those on the obverse. The "All Over" designation distinguishes this variety from die marriages showing localized filing in specific areas, as the comprehensive coverage across both complete die faces documents a systematic and thorough die maintenance operation rather than a targeted intervention at a specific problem area. The predominantly vertical orientation of the file lines on both sides suggests a consistent filing direction was maintained throughout the maintenance process, creating parallel linear patterns that are most visible in the open field areas where no design elements interrupt the striations. The DPIS notation confirms that in 1921, dates were part of the master die, so no date position variation exists. George T. Morgan's design was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter.
