Description

Discovered by Mel Wadlinger in 2018, the 1921-P VAM-1AQ3 Morgan Dollar is designated "Scribbling Die Scratches and File Lines F and Wing Tips" — a late die state variety carrying rarity ratings of I-2 R-6, indicating considerable scarcity with an estimated 13 to 30 known specimens. This variety is classified as a Stage IV die state (IV 1 - D1a), meaning the die had progressed well beyond its normal service life. The reverse C3a shows particularly advanced deterioration: heavy extensive die file lines appear at TED S and ES OF A areas, applied by Mint personnel in an attempt to erase vertical die gouges that had developed at the F and the eagle's right wing tip. This filing intervention represents direct human modification of a production die — when die surfaces developed gouges or damage during use, engravers at the Mint sometimes used files to smooth the affected areas rather than replacing the die entirely. The filing process left its own marks, creating the distinctive "file lines" visible on struck coins. The 1921 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar holds unique significance as the final year of Morgan Dollar production (until the 2021 centennial reissue), with a mintage of approximately 44.7 million pieces — one of the highest in the series. Despite this enormous mintage, the R-6 rarity of VAM-1AQ3 reflects the narrow window during which a specific late die state produced coins before the die was finally retired. The alphanumeric "1AQ3" designation denotes this as a sub-variety derived from the parent VAM-1A die marriage through progressive die state evolution.
