The triangular marks can be seen below the tailfeathers that are spaced with exactly the same distance as denticle marks. How did this clash occur? We're not really sure, but it is apparent that denticles came into contact with the die and left behind an impression of their impact. You have to look hard to decide that the marks are struck by a clashed die rather than simply marks left by another coin impacting the surface. An experienced eye can tell the difference. Since the denticles clashed into the die, coins struck with the die after this clash have the denticle marks raised above the surface. # Dr. Mark Kimpton Selected the 1921-P VAM-40A as one of the "Super CD" list of the top clashed die varieties.
