Description
1921-D VAM-1BY Scribbling Die Scratches on Tail Feathers Discovered by John Baumgart, September 2006. 1BY (revised) IV 1 · D2a (Scribbling Die Scratches on Tail Feathers) (189) Obverse IV1 - Very slightly doubled nose profile. Reverse D2a– Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers above eagle’s right leg and between eagle's left wing and body. Die marker - Vertical die scratch at left of lower wreath berry above right L in Dollar. Date position (DPIS): In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Notes: Interesting notes on this VAM: The 21-D VAM-1BY, discovered by John Baumgart in 2006, was the first variety listed exclusively for scribbling scratches. Appropriately, at the VAM Thing at the FUN Show 2008, it was determined that John Baumgart is the "Father of Scribbling VAMs." John first applied the term "scribbling" to these coins in 2006 in a submission to Leroy that produced the 1921-D VAM-1BY. John earned the title of patriarch by winning a game of rock-scissors-paper against himself. Although he technically also lost this contest, no one is going to mention it. Scribbling Scratches Varieties are numerous and difficult to photograph. Many existing varieties include scribbling scratches features on the tailfeathers in addition to their primary features (pick up points). When possible, we will attempt to show non-scribbling scratches die features to help with attribution. Most likely some of the new scribbling scratches varieties will be ultimately eliminated as early die states of known VAMs for which the die breaks, etc. have not yet formed. This is a fairly late die state coin, but the scribbles are still identifiable. There is a long die scratch between the A and M of AMERICA. Here is a LDS specimen notice the crack above the 1st A in States. Here is a close up of just the Bow of the 1BY.
