Description
1921-D VAM-1AN Die Break Wreath 2 Discovered by John Kohut, February 2004 1AN IV 1 · D2a (Die Break Wreath) (189) Obverse IV 1 – Slight doubling and tripling on 1–5 left stars. Reverse D2a – Vertical die break in third leaf cluster from top of left wreath plus small die chip in top fourth leaf cluster from top. Earlier die state of VAM 12A. DPIS – In 1921 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Large die break hidden in wreath near the U of UNITED. It is easy to overlook, but once located it is actually quite large. When you've identified the reverse die break below, be sure to check the obverse features to determine if the coin is a 1921-D VAM-12A or a VAM-1AN. The exact same reverse die was first used on VAM-1AP, then on VAM-1AN, then on VAM-12A, which can show much more break in the wreath and more die cracking.
