Description

John Kohut discovered this die pair in October 2003, and it is cataloged as the 1921-D VAM-1AL Morgan Dollar with die pair classification IV 1, reverse D2a, and a desirability rating of three stars. The defining feature is a double diagonal die gouge between the letters N and E of ONE on the reverse, continuing as a single gouge through the middle of the E. Die gouges are incuse marks on the die surface created by accidental contact with foreign objects or tools during die preparation, which appear as raised features on the struck coin. The 1921 dates on Morgan Dollars were produced as part of the master die rather than individually punched, so there is no variation in date position — all 1921 dies share identical date placement. The 1921-D Morgan Dollar holds special significance as the first Morgan Dollar struck at the Denver Mint, which had never produced the denomination during the original 1878-1904 run.
