1921-D VAM-1AJ2

Description

Credited to Rob Joyce from an August 2003 discovery, VAM-1AJ2 of the 1921-D Morgan Dollar carries the designation 1AJ2 IV 1 \u00b7 D2a. The obverse exhibits very slight doubling and tripling on the left stars and digits 19, while the reverse\'s defining feature is a faint diagonal die scratch positioned between the O and F of OF. Very slight doubling of ED STATES O toward the rim adds a secondary doubled element to the reverse design. A small diagonal die gouge between O and F, visible only at the right viewing angle, provides a confirming marker that complements the more obvious scratch. An additional gouge may appear between the "u" and "s" of "Trust," though this marker requires careful examination. Because the 1921 Morgan Dollar production employed master dies with dates already incorporated, all 1921 varieties share consistent date placement, making die-specific markers rather than date position the essential attribution tool. The Denver Mint\'s 1921 Morgan Dollar output, produced alongside Philadelphia and San Francisco, contributed to the massive final-year coinage before the Peace Dollar design replaced the Morgan in 1922.
