Another May 2024 discovery credited to Dennis Halladay, the 1921-D VAM-1AJ1 shares the same die pair classification pattern as its sibling VAM-1AF1 — classified IV 1 - D2a with the "Scribbling Scratches" diagnostic, die pair 189 — yet represents a distinct die marriage that warranted separate cataloging. Both varieties originate from the Denver Mint's sole year of Morgan Dollar production, when Mint Director Raymond T. Baker oversaw the striking of over 20 million silver dollars to replenish reserves depleted by Pittman Act melting. The obverse die state IV 1 provides the foundation pairing, while the reverse D2a die exhibits the characteristic fine die scratches in various directions on over-polished tail feathers around the eagle's right leg and between the eagle's left wing and body. The distinction between VAM-1AF1 and VAM-1AJ1 lies in the specific die pairing: although both reverse dies show similar polishing patterns — a consequence of Denver Mint workshop practices where multiple dies received comparable treatment — they represent different physical dies matched to different obverse dies, creating unique die marriages.
