Description

Both varieties originate from the Denver Mint's sole year of Morgan Dollar production, when Mint Director Raymond T. Baker oversaw the striking of over 20 million silver dollars to replenish reserves depleted by Pittman Act melting. The obverse die state IV 1 provides the foundation pairing, while the reverse D2a die exhibits the characteristic fine die scratches in various directions on over-polished tail feathers around the eagle's right leg and between the eagle's left wing and body. VAM classification fundamentally tracks die marriages rather than individual features, so two varieties can share descriptive characteristics while remaining distinct catalog entries. The discovery of multiple new VAMs on a heavily collected date like 1921-D in 2024 underscores the depth of the Morgan Dollar die variety field and the ongoing contributions of dedicated researchers who examine coins with fresh eyes and modern imaging techniques.
