1919 Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-1919-01

Description

Cataloged as ADC-5c-1919-01 by MadDieClashes, this 1919 Buffalo nickel displays an atypical die clash — a collision between obverse and reverse dies that occurred with the dies offset from normal alignment. Because the dies were off-center during the clash, transferred design elements landed in unusual positions. Most dramatically, the buffalo's head from the reverse left an impression between the first and second feathers on the obverse Indian head, creating the illusion of a "fourth feather." A die crack runs through the O in OF, connecting to the clash mark from the Indian's neck. This same die also produced a rim cud cataloged as CU-5c-1919-03, meaning the die was deteriorating in multiple ways simultaneously. The coin is part of Fred Weinberg's collection. Atypical clashes differ from typical ones because offset positioning creates transferred images in unexpected areas, making each example visually unique and requiring individual study rather than pattern recognition.
