Description

This 1919 (D) Lincoln Wheat cent exhibits a die clash affecting both sides. On the reverse, the bottom of the back of Lincoln's head and the top of his back are transferred into the field, and on the obverse part of the C from CENT is clashed into the portrait area. Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other with no planchet between them, driving each design into the opposing die face. The bilateral transfer on this coin confirms the impact carried enough force to mark both working surfaces. The 1919-D was struck in the first full year of peacetime production following the Armistice, with a mintage of 57,154,000.
