Description

With the Armistice signed in November 1918, the 1919-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in the first full year of peacetime — yet Denver Mint production infrastructure still bore the marks of wartime intensity, and this first documented reverse rim cud for the date reflects ongoing die stress during the transition. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The "R" suffix places this cud on the Wheat Ears reverse side. The 1919-D continues a remarkable sequence of Denver Mint dates — 1916-D through 1919-D — each producing at least one documented reverse rim cud, spanning the wartime and immediate postwar periods. Whether postwar die production returned immediately to peacetime quality standards or whether existing wartime die stocks were consumed first is a question these cuds collectively illuminate. Cross-referenced as CU-1C-1919D-01R, cataloged by Cuds on Coins. Post-Armistice coinage carries its own historical resonance as the nation transitioned from wartime footing.
