Description

Discovered by Martin Field in November 1985, the 1904-S Morgan Dollar VAM-6 features the numeral 4 in the date doubled at the bottom inside of the opening and at the top right of the bottom crossbar (obverse die III2 5, reverse die C4a, catalog number 189). Date doubling on the angular features of the numeral 4 is particularly visible because the straight lines and sharp angles of this digit provide clear reference edges where secondary impressions create precise doubled outlines. The 1904-S holds special significance as one of the final Morgan Dollar dates before the series' original production run ended — regular production ceased after 1904, with no Morgan Dollars struck until the brief 1921 revival. San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollars from 1904 are the last San Francisco issues of the original run, making die varieties from this date the final Bay City chapter in the initial Morgan Dollar story. Martin Field's 1985 discovery added VAM-6 to the growing catalog of 1904-S varieties, and the specific doubling on the 4's crossbar and opening provides a clear diagnostic feature for attribution.
