1904-S VAM-5 Doubled 4, High S Discovered by Jim Baxter, May 1979. Die pair: 5 III3 4 - C4b (Doubled 4, High S) (189) Obverse III3 4: The numeral 4 in the date shows doubling slightly below the crossbar and at the base, where a secondary hub impression left extra thickness on these fine horizontal and vertical elements. Reverse C4b: Mint mark set high and upright relative to the standard position, placing the S above its typical location between the eagle's tail feathers and the wreath bow. San Francisco Mint production. The 1904-S holds a distinctive place in Morgan Dollar history as one of the final pre-hiatus issues — silver dollar production ceased after 1904 and did not resume until 1921, when the design was briefly revived before yielding to the Peace Dollar. Varieties from this terminal year document the last working dies prepared for the original Morgan Dollar run, lending historical weight to any cataloged anomaly. Baxter's discovery contributed to the growing body of documented 1904-S die pairs during a productive period of VAM research.
