1900-S VAM-29

Description

Sharing its obverse die with VAM-27, the 1900-S VAM-29 Morgan Dollar was attributed in 2019 by PacificWR and exhibits a near slanted date — a die marriage connection linking two catalog entries to the same obverse paired with different reverses. Cataloged as III2 12 - C3b, the variety features a wide V-shaped S mintmark set slightly to the right of center. Die polishing lines visible in the wreath bow provide a die marker, distinguishing this reverse die from others used with the shared obverse. Die sharing between VAM numbers is common in Morgan Dollar production, where a single obverse die might be paired with multiple reverse dies over its service life as worn reverses were replaced — documenting these die marriages reconstructs the sequence of die usage at San Francisco. The 1900-S Morgan Dollar was produced during the final years of the nineteenth century, when the Mint continued to coin large quantities of silver dollars from western bullion. The near slanted date indicates the logotype was set at a slight angle and closer to design elements than standard positioning, providing a visible sorting criterion for attributors working through quantities of 1900-S dollars.
