1900-S VAM-27

Description

Discovered in 2019 by PacificWR, the 1900-S VAM-27 is catalogued as III2 12 C3d — Near Slanted Date, High S. The date is set further left than normal, with the right 0 positioned higher than the 1, producing the characteristic slant that names this variety. A die polishing line runs through the ER of LIBERTY, serving as the primary obverse die marker. The reverse C3d classification shows the S mintmark sitting high in the field, with a corresponding reverse marker confirming the die pair. The 1900-S had a San Francisco mintage of approximately 3.5 million coins, placing it in the middle tier of S-mint Morgan issues for the era. San Francisco output of this period is well represented in collector holdings, as western Mint bags were often preserved rather than released into commerce. VAM collecting on 1900-S has a long documented history, and the leftward slanted date placement on VAM-27 reflects the handwork of individual die sinkers at the turn of the twentieth century. Reverse C3d - ''Die Marker -'' Some slanted short die scratches in middle of eagle's left wing and one on fourth feather from wing bottom.
