1900-S VAM-20

Description

Discovered by Laurence Galbraith in July 2006 and revised in 2019, 1900-S VAM-20 is catalogued as 20 III2 1 · C3i — High S Tilted Right. The obverse III2 1 shows a normal die. The reverse C3i carries a High S mintmark that is tilted to the right, with a die scratch visible to the right of the S mintmark serving as the confirming reverse die marker. The 2019 revision updated the attribution parameters for this variety. The 1900-S Morgan dollar in 90% silver was struck at San Francisco with a mintage of approximately 3.5 million pieces. Mintmark placement and orientation on Morgan dollars reflect the hand application of individual mintmark punches, producing a wide range of positional and angular variations across the series. Rarity for VAM-20 has not yet been established, marked as unknown in the reference record pending sufficient census accumulation. Collectors seeking this variety should focus on the high mintmark elevation and rightward tilt, confirmed by the die scratch east of the S, before submitting for attribution.
