Description

Pat Mullen identified this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar variety in 2009, cataloging it as VAM-21F with a classification of III2 - C3I and a rarity rating of 187. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, the 1900-O is a relatively common date in the Morgan series, but VAM-21F stands apart through its distinctive combination of a near date position, high-set O mintmark, and dramatic die gouges through the reverse legend. The reverse exhibits vertical striated bands extending from the rim above the E through RIC to the rim above the A in AMERICA, with a second striated band running above the first and closer to the rim. These parallel bands of die damage create a visually striking pattern across the right portion of the reverse legend that makes the variety readily identifiable once a collector knows what to look for. The near date and elevated mintmark position on the obverse provide initial screening criteria before turning the coin over to confirm the diagnostic reverse gouges that define this late die state within the VAM-21 die marriage. =1900-O VAM-21F Near Date, High O, Die Gouges RIC= Discovered by Pat Mullen 2009 21F III2 – C3I (Near Date, High O, Die Gouges RIC) (187) Reverse C3I- Vertical striated band from rim above E thru RIC to rim above A in AMERICA with another striated band above it and closer to the rim.
