1900 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
The first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1900-O Morgan Dollar from the New Orleans Mint, this variety displays Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on the reverse wreath. The spread is most prominent on the upper right leaves and veins, with lighter doubling also visible on the upper left leaves. Wexler Variety ID: 1900 WDDR-001. Die markers provide robust attribution diagnostics on both sides of the coin: the obverse shows a die clash impression in front of Liberty's eye along with a die gouge below the eye, while the reverse bears a die clash running from the C of CENT southward to the wreath. These clash marks indicate the die pair came together without a planchet between them at some point during production, and the resulting ghost impressions from the opposing die became permanent markers. Class II doubling results from a distorted hub — the hub itself carried the doubling, which was then transferred to the working die during hubbing. New Orleans Mint production.
