1892 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
Among the earliest hub doubling varieties in the Barber Quarter series, the 1892 WDDR-004 exhibits Class II tripling — not merely doubling — with spread toward the center on USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, stars, outer leaves, and arrow shafts. Tripling indicates three distinct hub impressions, considerably less common than standard doubling. This reverse is married to obverse WDDO-004, forming a pair where both dies carry hub anomalies. Obverse markers include a die crack from the right point of the bust to star R1, with a second crack from R1 not quite reaching R2. The reverse shows a typical die chip in the upper right of the second S in STATES. Cross-referenced as Flynn DDR-004 and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1892 25-cent WDDR-004. The 1892 Philadelphia Mint Barber Quarter was the inaugural year of Charles Barber's design, making die varieties from this debut production notable for type and variety collectors.
