1892 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Also attributed as WRPD-002 for a repunched date, WDDO-002 on the 1892 Barber Quarter documents both hub doubling and date repunching on this first-year issue of Charles Barber's design. Struck in 90% silver, the 1892 date inaugurated the Barber Quarter series continuing through 1916, making varieties from this inaugural year particularly notable. The Class II spread toward center affects the stars, ribbon, and IN GOD WE TRUST, compressing these elements inward. The repunched date shows the 18 shifted to the south and the 2 to the north, indicating multiple punching impressions in different directions. Cross-referenced as Flynn DDO-002 and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1892 25¢ WDDO-002, the dual DDO/RPD attribution means collectors can identify this variety through either the hub doubling or the date repunching.
