Error
Description
A recent discovery from December 2024 by Brent Fogelberg, this 1891-S Morgan Dollar is classified as 25 III2 18 C3l (Doubled Hair, S Tilted Right, Doubled Arrow Shafts). The obverse (III2 18) shows the date in its normal lateral position with some hair edges opposite LU in LIBERTY displaying doubling, and the S mintmark is tilted to the right. The reverse (C3l) exhibits doubled arrow shafts held in the eagle's talons. The combination of three distinct die characteristics — doubled hair detail, a tilted mintmark, and doubled arrow shafts — provides multiple attribution points distributed across both sides of the coin. As a December 2024 discovery, VAM-25 represents one of the newest additions to the 1891-S Morgan Dollar catalog, demonstrating that dedicated researchers continue to identify previously undocumented die varieties more than 130 years after these coins were struck. Produced at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver, the 1891-S is among the later dates in the original Morgan Dollar production run.
