Error
Description
Martin Field's May 1985 discovery of the 1891-P VAM-7 added another doubled date variety to the final year of the original Morgan Dollar production run before the series went on hiatus until 1921. Cataloged as 7 III2 7, this Philadelphia Mint variety features the 9 doubled at the bottom inside of both loops and the 1 doubled as a thin horizontal line above the left side of the lower crossbar. A horizontal die scratch along the truncation to the right of George T. Morgan's initial serves as a distinctive die marker, connecting this variety to the designer whose artistry defined the entire series. The doubled 91 creates a subtle but identifiable diagnostic that rewards patient examination under magnification. As the last regular-issue year before the 1892-1920 production gap, 1891-P Morgan Dollars occupy a special place in the series timeline. =1891-P VAM-7 Doubled 91= Discovered by Martin Field, May 1985.
